The big "0-5"
This guy turned five this year.
I would stop and wax nostalgic if I had the time, but I don't. I'll just say that Corban's turning five years old was very symbolic to me, it was a real goal of mine through some very crazy years. I was always told by people that having kids close in age is so hard for five years but after that, you will be so grateful that you did it the way that you did. That plus some depression after he was born, I just somehow always used the age of five as a goal. I wouldn't say I missed out or wished away the years, I just always believed that it would be a true accomplishment for me when my son turned five years old. And that it is!
This boy was and is an incredible journey of a boy. He uses every emotional/ physical/ emotional/ spiritual muscle in our bodies every day, and I'm not exaggerating. Corban demands my "A" game or things go downhill very quickly. He's smart and caring and sensitive and complex and wild and passionate and impatient and thoughtful and abusive and loving and so many other RAW characteristics. As such, he's a real adventure to raise. I am always left wondering why the Lord made this person the way that he made him-- I cannot wait to see his mission in life, and how it is going to use his abundant skills and talents and personality characteristics. His talents blow me away.
For Corban's birthday this year, we ended up taking a very last minute trip to San Diego where we rented him a "Water Motorcycle" to cruise around Mission Bay. A fulfillment of one of his (short)life long dreams.
Of course it was hot where we live in April so we were stupidly shocked when we got there and it was dark and cloudy and cold and windy. Ha ha. Our poor family put up with us. Didn't change our fun, just surprised me a bit.
Happy Birthday to the little boy who has swept me off of my feet.
Five years old, I cannot believe it. Little tear.
Pop and camp fire and water motorcycle? Sounds like a perfect day.
The kids, worried about the jet ski, that it was going to float away.
Ken took people on rides pretty much all day. He and I went out together (I'm less embarrassed to admit this now that I'm not pregnant any more and I delivered a happy and healthy and beautiful baby despite my riding on a jet ski in my late third trimester). When I drove, we caught a little air, ha ha. Such fun.
Keeping each other warm.
Lissy burying her head to avoid the smoke.
More cuddling. Penelope has always loved Grandma M, she used to give Grandma her biggest smiles as a tiny baby.
He wanted a worm cake, which ended up working out perfectly since we had to haul it to San Diego rather than do it at home! I had to post this picture, because my husband walking around in a wet suit all day is pretty much the awesomest ever.
We had to tilt the awning sideways because it was too windy for a fire otherwise. We are the classiest folks in town.
How can you not adore this little sassy face?
Greg is battling the BAR exam, glad he could come along and hang for a while, also to build our fire for us. :)
It was such a wonderful day and if I had been a better photographer I would have actually gotten photos of everyone. We love our family, thank you all for showing up at the very last minute. Corban felt special and loved and that's really what a birthday celebration is about, I think. Thank you!!
